Research blog: Commercial Conventions

The products I choose for the commercial was a Wilson brand basketball and Gatorade sports drink. In the beginning of brainstorming what product(s) I could film the commercial for, I looked towards the things that interested me. Thats why when I choose the product I looked at everyday things I used and had fun doing. One of things I really enjoy is playing basketball with my friends and having that as the base of the commercial, I then realized that a major part of the sport is the ball being used. With the recent news of the NBA changing their ball brand of Spalding to Wilson, this was the best option and reasoning of picking the product.  Another big part of sports that I like was drinking fluids that help you perform better and Gatorade is one of the biggest brands that comes to mind and covers this. This is because Gatorade has made it seem that drinking its sports drink while tired will give you a boost and help you perform better.

After finding the product I researched more about the brand and what their goal was. This helped me discover the conventions of the product. When looking through the Wilson ball on its website and watching Gatorade commercials, I searched for common elements found either in pictures or film, settings, themes or events. By looking at these categories it helped me get the conventions I need to add in my commercial, so that I best portray my product and the meaning behind its invention. Although this was just the conventions of elements they had in their website, I still needed view a commercial they made and view certain things ( Conventions) they added to define their product and make people want to purchase it.

I noticed that the conventions that showed in their commercials was all the technology the ball had that they listed in their website. Some of these special features that the Wilson ball had and they showed was: the grip of the ball, cushion core, control of the ball, and laces around the ball. Other types of conventions were athletes, a basketball court, and basketball sneakers. These conventions all are tied together since when combined it allows you to get the full feel of playing basketball at the best level. When watching the commercial and pictures Wilson had for its Evolution basketball it made me feel like I wanted to buy the ball and go and play at a high level, this is because thats the main goal of a commercial and when done correctly it makes the marketing of the product easier. For Gatorade one major aspect of its commercials was the conventions of an athlete training and becoming tired. This help introduce the product as it showed a cause and effect since the cause was being tired, the effect is drinking Gatorade to boost Performance. Gatorade then finishes their commercial with their slogan "The thirst quencher" which helps improve the commercial as the last thing you see is ultimately what makes you remember/ gives you the feeling that when you are tired you should drink at Gatorade.

Both of these products would work great together since both of the brands mission are to improve the way you play. This means that I have to portray this message in the commercial. One key aspects that need to be included that is a convention in both products are exercise and being fast. I think that the sport of Basketball and the products I have is the best fit as it covers all the conventions need to give the message of improving the way you play and perform.
