The Takes of Filming the Wilson X Gatorade commercial
The day of filming my commercial was on Thursday, October 29th. Before we started to film I as the Director of the commercial I wanted to make sure that the athlete (a friend) knew what each scene was going to look like. This helped me and made it easier to show the vision I had for the end result. This is why before I actually started to record our takes, I made the athlete reenact every scene to see what he thought of them and see if he wanted to change or add something in. During these practices, I watched him go through each seen, so that I could redirect him if I wanted him to do something a certain way so that it would look better on camera. This would soon be found out to effect the filming of the commercial later on which I didn't know of. The reason why changing the way the athlete played effect the video is because when he performed a move, it didn't look as good on the camera then originally thought of. In my planning I list the camera angles I wanted to film in during the commercial but, because of the way it look in camera I had to change the view as it would better capture the skills of the player. We would go over these scenes until we were sure that we wanted it to be filmed that way. This took a while as new ideas came to me but, I tried to stay to my plan of filming it as much as I could as it was the original framework for the commercial. Once we made sure of everything then we finally started filming the commercial. The process of actually filming the commercial also took longer than I thought as well. The reason it took a while to film it was because of all the takes. These takes included all the videos cut short because of mistakes made of acting, scene interruptions, and dunks/shots missed. By the end of the day when we wrapped up the commercials I nearly had up to 50 takes with only 12 good takes that I can takes part out of to make the commercial during the editing process. When filming I did not use a tripod and instead I handled the camera that was on my phone. The reason I choose to handle the camera was because it allowed for the camera to move with the athlete and gave the camera movement of track, talked about in the planning process. While this benefited the scenes of the commercial it was also tricky, as it was my first time using different camera angles and movements I had to make sure that I wasn't shaking the camera of the phone a lot because it would have messed up the scene and made it look weird. As we continued on the filming of the scenes for the commercial it became easier throughout the scenes as we started to figure out how to perform and record the scene. Since it became easier further along the scenes, less and less errors. I wish I knew the errors and setbacks of directing before filming that I know now. At the end of the day, I was happy with all the takes I took since I learned and improved on my directing skills learning with videos were good and which were bad. I feel that I have enough takes to be able to have options when it comes to editing and making my commercial look the best.
