Genre Research: Bird Box
In the movie Bird Box we witness the beginning of a post-apocalyptic world. Following a mother and her two kid we notice that there is a creature that cannot be seen but kills if your eyes detect it. This leaves the human race hiding in their home, but when the mother hears of a place that people can survive without the worry of seeing the creature, she journeys to find it. Although they know where it is located, the challenge that the mother and kids are faced with is that they have to journey blindfolded. This presents many problems for the mother has they face many dangerous and loose many people but, she is determined to find this sanctuary.
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
One element of the genre that I chose to base my final task that Bird Box has is the fear of the unknown. Having the Mother take her kids somewhere she is unfamiliar with not know what will happen in the journey puts fear in the characters. Adding to this fear of the unknown is that the characters are blindfolded creating fear for both the characters and the viewers. This is because we can see whats happening so we worry what will happen to the characters. This allows for a mystery aspect which adds to the plot and guides the storyline.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
One element of the genre that the movie had that I liked is the element of setting. This element stuck out to me since it is held at something very important in the film. This is because the characters have to make sure that their surrounding don't put harm to themselves. The reason why I like this element is because it will be included to my film. Having my character pay close attention to his surroundings as if could cost his life.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
Elements of the genre that the movie had that did not appeal to me is the element of emotions. After watching the movie, I feel the the film does a bad job capturing the characters emotions. The reason behind this is that the movie focuses more of the screen time with chaos resulting with the emotions being pushed off to the side. This at some points of the film make the character seem lifeless. In my film I will try to capture more emotions as it effects how the character acts.
